Oliver Jeffers has come out with a new picture book, The Heart and the Bottle.

Once there was a girl who was full of wonderment at how the world worked. She shared all her dreams and excitement with her father, who always had the answer to every question. Jeffers creates beautiful stories with his work, which are not contained just to the picture books he has done… the storytelling can be seen throughout is art and making process. If I could spend a day in that studio of his, I’d probably never want to leave.

I Often Dream of Trains in New York DELUXE EDITION

Gamil Design worked with Yep Roc and Robyn Hitchcock to create a deluxe CD package for a limited Deluxe Edition of “I Often Dream of Trains in New York”. The classic looking CD package unfolds and transforms into a phenakistoscope, or moving picture machine. Original CD and DVD artwork can be viewed as animations through the included viewer. Gamil developed and produced the package concept, design and artwork. Each part of this deluxe package was made in the USA. This Deluxe Edition can be purchased at Yep Roc!

Away We Go Movie Poster

A couple years ago Beth wrote about the yU+co title sequence for The Bee Movie. Well it is about time for us to take note of another movie that has beautiful Typography and Illustration. I saw the Trailer for “Away We Go” a month or so ago, and it has been on my mind often. I absolutely love the movie poster (above) with the mix of photography, illustrated background, and Hand-Lettered Type.

Away We Go comes out in Theaters June 12, 2009.

Dress up your house with Adriana Barra’s home fashion!

Brazilian designer, Adriana Barra, is known and loved for her juicy beautiful prints on “boho” dresses. She has translated that design to furniture with a new collection from Micasa called The Moda home collection.

I’m guessin’ you gotta pay for high fashion…especially by the $7500 price tag of a cute little min-refrigerator.

If you’re like me, and can’t afford a life of high-style luxury, you can still immerse yourself in Adriana’s creativity and saturated chaos by visiting her website. Make sure you plan ahead though. she has made it easy to make yourself at home.

After you click in, you get a scene…and the scenes change as you move through the site. In fact, you can even travel with her and see different countries, as well as her pictures and journal entries from those places (you gotta read Portuguese though).

She has a “fun” area too, you can play games, or just pick out your fortune cookie.

local spotlight: Andrea Cobb’s illustrations

Andrea Cobb is a local artist and illustrator living in Durham, NC. We have loved her work for a long time, and continue to be excited as we see her easily recognizable style in advertising and publications throughout the country. As you can probably guess from her work, she’s a really nice sweet person too! I haven’t seen her greeting cards, but my understanding is that she has a line in Target. Her commercial work is represented by i2iart, and she has done fabulous feature illustrations for all sorts of consumer mags, advertising and package/product art. Way to go Andrea! yU+co title sequence makes The Bee Movie worth seeing

I liked The Bee Movie. It was cute.This blog entry is not about critiquing the movie though, so let me move on after simply saying that compared to other kids movies that have a lot of story interest, humor and visual appeal for the over 12 crowd (i.e. Happy Feet or The Incredibles), The Bee Movie left me a little bored.

So, it was quite surprising that a movie which fell flat for me, had me staying in my seat through the entire ending title sequence. My only critique was that it was completely different, basically unrecognizable, to the rest of the movie – which was also a good thing about it. yU+co created the sequence. The background environment is almost painterly with a plane of animation in front (sorry animators, I know I’m not using the right descriptors here) following a simple flat bee graphic and falling letters of unicase serifs (maybe Filosofia?) for all of the titling info. It’s a great example of animated graphic design.

So if you go to see The Bee Movie, stay til the lights come up or you’ll miss the best part.
