I often say if you found out your local ‘favorite’ was closing people would flock there. As a ‘local’ business hoping to be a ‘favorite’ how do you convert this love into attendance. The language of The 3/50 Project really resonates with this struggle and communicates the idea without being combative with larger national business. The Elephant is loved but its always great to see him jump to the little mouse. Don’t sell out, buy in, en 2010!

Everything That Happens Will Happen Today nominated for 3 Grammys

Last night the nomination list for the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards was announced. The album by David Byrne & Brian Eno “Everything that Happens will Happen Today” has received 3 nominations. The nominations were for Best Alternative Music Album, Best Recording Package and Best Boxed or Special Limited Edition Package.

Gamil Design worked with Stefan Sagmeister to bring to life the deluxe CD package for the album. Check out our post (with video of the package) and our writeup on the project.

Remember a few weeks ago when we featured the new Robyn Hitchcock Deluxe CD Package we did for Yep Roc Records? Well today we found out about a great case study in the Winter 2009 Issue of MediaPack magazine written by Larry Jaffee titled “He often dreams of packaging.” In the article Jaffee, wrote about the collaboration between Robyn Hitchcock (the artist), Yep Roc Records (Robyn’s label), and Gamil Design (the conceptual brain-power and designers) of the limited edition album.

I Often Dream of Trains in New York DELUXE EDITION

Gamil Design worked with Yep Roc and Robyn Hitchcock to create a deluxe CD package for a limited Deluxe Edition of “I Often Dream of Trains in New York”. The classic looking CD package unfolds and transforms into a phenakistoscope, or moving picture machine. Original CD and DVD artwork can be viewed as animations through the included viewer. Gamil developed and produced the package concept, design and artwork. Each part of this deluxe package was made in the USA. This Deluxe Edition can be purchased at Yep Roc!

Paris + Ohio = Macaron Joy

Pâtisserie of Lite

If you have not been to Paris in the past 100 years or so you have been missing out. Macaron’s (not to be confused w/ coconut macaroons) are the signature confection in The City of Light. Composed of a delicate pillow of meringue, almond and silky sweet fillings in a myriad of colors. You may even wonder if the city’s nickname was inspired just by this delight.

Never fear! In Columbus Ohio, Anne Fletcher has made a crossroads between US(a) and Les Parisiennes at her lovely Pistacia Vera.

Only recently have I known of this wonderful shop. Interested in my product, The Teastick, Anne contacted me for pricing and I casually mentioned the macaron desert I am marooned in… and just today, I received this elegant box of assorted macarons in the mail. Totally unexpected! I have now become the hero of the office (sorry Beth). My advice to you, if you are not travelling soon to Columbus (or Paris), is to get online and ship yourself an assortment from Pistacia Vera and become the hero of your friends and family. Alchemy Bags bring new style to old tubes

A personal favorite of the NYIGF, Alchemy Goods are design heroes: reusing old bicycle tubes, manufacturing in the USA (Seattle), and working with the inherent properties of their materials to make truly beautiful and unique designs.

I love the Magnolia – but check out these design details from sewing together innertubes!

Their work demonstrates a beautiful sense of design with an emerging mastery over their materials and processes. Alchemy indeed!

Local Cotton Tshirts for Local Store

I love living in Raleigh, and believe it is important to support local buisness and local products. Great Outdoor Provision Company is our local outdoor retailer, and they have just received a shipment of new GOPC logo T-shirts. These aren’t just any T-shirts though… they were grown and manufactured right here in our own state as part of Cotton of the Carolinas.

Lizzy House’ Fabric and Heather Ross’ Smocked Sundress

Here is a beautiful new fabric collection from Lizzy House called Red Letter Day. I’ve been on a sewing kick lately, and think that one of these prints would be perfect for the Smocked Sundress pattern from Heather Ross‘ book Weekend Sewing! A little over a week ago, Heather was on the Martha Stewart Show making this sundress. Check out that video here!

Architect-y Footwear: Zaha Hadid for Lacoste

It used to be that architects were also obligated to design chairs. Now that trend has shifted to shoes, at least for Zaha Hadid. Her recent endeavor is a footwear line for Lacoste.

The design and texture is based on series of overlaid and repeated patterns to give the shoe a dynamic fluid feel. A winding strap touts a bi-stable metal band to support the shoe at ankle or knee height for men’s and women’s editions, respectively. (Note: bi-stable metal band= snap bracelet technology)

Intrigued? You must act fast and internationally. This is an extremely limited edition of only 850 pairs available at exclusive boutiques in Paris, London and Milan.

Hadid is no newcomer to footwear, she has also designed a pair of unabashedly Zaha-esqe shoes for molded footwear sensation, Melissa.

Royal/T: Japanese Style Cosplay Cafe, Shop and Art Space

Today I wish I were in the LA area and I wish I were here… Royal/T. Royal/T is LA’s first Japanese-style cosplay (costume-play) cafe. But that isn’t all… It is also an Art Gallery focusing on Japanese Contemporary Art (the gallery art rotates every 4 months) and a Shop that is curated with rotating artist made goods and design objects that supplement the gallery show.
