Blue Flame Tattoo came to Gamil Design wanting a new website that was simple yet decorative, and able to accommodate large galleries for each of the artist. I think giant portraits or photos of family members over the fireplace is usually…well…kinda creepy. But Valerie Leonard has hit on the exact right kind of creepy with her ancestral pet portraits. I would not have any problem hanging one of these in a place of prominence…

Gamil Helps SPARKcon Become a Huge Success

Thanks to all the staff at Gamil, Gamila, The Visual Art Exchange, Artspace and many many more, SPARKcon had a huge weekend to promote local creativity of the Triangle.

Lots of people ask why we do it and what we’re trying to create. We consistently work from the values established in the original SPARKcon Comment -which resulted from facilitating hundreds of citizen at the first ideaSPARK.

However we found the real mission statement was truly eminated from those who participated, in a unified voice. After 4 years of thinking and planning, we see that our open-source approach to creating a talent showcase structure is a unique construction that works and empowers the community to show their stuff and connect.

Spark on!

Where have we been?

We have had a very busy summer, and can’t believe that the long days of light are basically over! Currently we are in the middle of SPARKcon* Frenzy… This year the event will bring together over 1150 performers/artists/craftspeople/designers for the annual 4 day festival! Lisa Hannigan, “I Don’t Know” and “Lille”

Today is looking to be a busy day, so here is a quick little eye/ear candy to start the day. Lisa Hannigan is an irish singer songwriter that I’ve been listening to for a few months now. Her album “Sea Sew” came out last September, and I am loving the Crafty/(very well done) DIY feel of both the album itself as well as the videos for two of her songs (”I Don’t Know” and “Lille”). For some reason I am having a few problems actually posting the videos here so check out the “I Don’t Know” video and “Lille” video on Vimeo. Below are screenshots from the two videos.

ICFF 2009 Wraps Up Today

The 21st annual International Contemporary Furniture Fair (ICFF) wraps up today in NYC. I have never had the oppertunity to go to the show, but have enjoyed living vicariously through those that have. Two bloggers I follow regularly, Grace Bonney of Design*Sponge and Jennifer Ward of Minor Details, went to the show this past weekend, and had great posts up on their blogs yesterday of some of their favorite finds.

Royal/T: Japanese Style Cosplay Cafe, Shop and Art Space

Today I wish I were in the LA area and I wish I were here… Royal/T. Royal/T is LA’s first Japanese-style cosplay (costume-play) cafe. But that isn’t all… It is also an Art Gallery focusing on Japanese Contemporary Art (the gallery art rotates every 4 months) and a Shop that is curated with rotating artist made goods and design objects that supplement the gallery show.

TikaTok Publishing for Kids Under 13

Last Wednesday, We posted about how Blurb.com allows you to upload your blog content and publish a book from it. Today I thought I’d feature another online publisher… Tikatok™.

TikaTok was begun by two mothers with the goal of encouraging their children as well as children everywhere to channel their imaginations and creativity into stories that then can be published and shared with friends and family.

I absolutely love the concept as well as how the concept is working in the TikaTok community. Children make relationships and associations of ideas that grown-ups with our practical rational minds (if you drop something gravity will difinitely cause it fall) would never come up with.

Of the books I’ve previewed on the site, I’d say The Great Puddin’ Tater , a story about a Siamese Kitten who turns into a superhero at night, is my current favorite. I mean really, how do you beat a superhero kitten.

Street-Signs into Spring Flowers

This morning I was running through the blogs I read on a regular bases, and came across this public art piece done by Mark Jenkins on Three Potato Four’s Blog. The “Signs of Spring” public art was done in both Washington, DC and Malmö, Sweden back in March/April of 2008. I wish our street signage was as pretty as Sweden’s!
