USS New York

Date February 26, 2009

I’m a big fan of recycling. The USS New York is a war ship made from 24 tons of scrap steel recovered from the World Trade Center.

Unfortunately in this case we not only recycled the steel but also our attitude towards fear. It would have been nicer to recycle that steel into something useful and compassionate. Like emergency housing for Katrina, perhaps?

For information, 24 tons is about enough steel to build five (5) anchors for this ship, or in dollars is worth about $12,000. The overall cost for the ship is estimates at $1 billion. An interesting point but the magnitude is really incidental. The steel estimate does include chain.

You are not considering who the people actually building the ship are. They are the ship yard workers in New Orleans who lost their homes in Katrina. The New York kept them working and helped them recover and rebuild from the terrible thing that happened to all of them.
