Creative Scam

Date April 17, 2008

Instead of getting our latest scam letter by the normal mode of email, we got it by actual mail. And what started out very recognizable as the standard “send me yer info and you’ll end up with a ton of cash” kind of scam, ended with a uniquely creative twist.

It was addressed to my husband, Aly Khalifa.

…I discovered an Abandoned sum of 77.7 million US dollars in a safety deposit box vault that belongs to on of our foreign Customer Mr. Anderseni Khalifa who died along with his entire family in a ghastly train explosion in Atocha, Madrid-SpainSince you have the same surname with this deceased customer you can easily make this claim with me, I have the entire secret information’s of this deposit which will help you claim the money as next of kin…

The “ghastly” train wreck was, of course, the Madrid train bombing. The letter goes on to explain all of the details and how she (the writer) has kept this secret, telling no one other than her husband. She signs off with a “Thanks and God Bless.” Ain’t she sweet to think of us?

Stumble it!

So I received a similar email declaring a Dr Edward Wilkins from my family died in a Nigeria Airline crash and left $32 million. The strange thing is that I had an uncle by that name who died a few years ago. I wonder if: A. They do background work before emailing a prospective target. B. Maybe my uncle led a double life and was in fact a oil baron in Nigeria worth millions. C. This is a sign and I should play the lottery tonight. D. Mere coincidence.

Better safe than sorry. I heading to buy a lottery ticket right now.
