Japanese Packaging Makes Shopping Fun
March 6, 2008
Whenever I go to China, I make a point to visit a grocery store to see the packaging. I end up buying a lot of it, and it’s almost always actually Japanese brands. It’s just so colorful and fun! James Bowskill has created “Off the Shelf: a Japanese packaging design scrapbook” online so you can see it without the $2500 airplane ticket. Here’s a sampling:

Kinchou Mosquito Coils – this is my favorite, partially because they chose to use a rooster as the graphic for mosquito coils. Huh?

Ajinomoto Salt – different versions of Panda faces are everywhere in the grocery!

Lamune Soda – and they’re definitely not afraid to make unique and pretty bottle shapes.
Check it all out at Off the Shelf.

These are fun to look at. Okay, what are mosquito coils? I guess a rooster is more pleasing to the eye than a mosquito brand.

I think mosquito coils are coils that burn kinda like incense coils except the smell is chemical yuckiness to keep skeeters away. After doing a quick Google search, I have now found out that roosters and chickens eat mosquito larvae, so I guess they are a good symbol (if you know the facts) of a mosquito fighter.
